NY Perspectives - Amsterdam Drift, by Rachel Esner
Exhibition in the Amsterdam City Archives 14 May – 23 August 2009
In 2009 New York and Amsterdam celebrate the historical link between the two cities. New York began its history as a Dutch trading post at the southern tip of Manhattan. In 2009 it is 400 years since Henry Hudson discovered the island of Manhattan and declared it to be an ideal natural harbour. To mark this 400th anniversary, the Amsterdam City Archives and Foam, in cooperation with the John Adams Institute, are organising a photo exhibition about Amsterdam, as seen through the eyes of New York photographers.
About the Cover: In Jan. 2009, Carl Wooley photographed a pedestrian passing by a development site in Lower Manhattan. Next American City asked Wooley (photo this page), along with Gus Powell and Brian Ulrich, to contribute images that capture the recession in cities. Their work is featured alongside the article, "Cities in Crisis", page 34.
