Chocolate Country wins Empowerment Category for the ViewChange Film Contest

We are pleased to announce that a short version of “Chocolate Country” has won an award in the ViewChange Film Contest, a competition created to highlight progress toward the United Nations Millennium Goals. A panel of celebrity judges awarded the film a $5,000 prize in the Empowerment category, and we are now featured on LinkTV’s dazzling new website Viewchange.org, which connects visitors to short films about global development and the resources to take action.

FotoWeek DC / 100 portraits – 100 photographers

100 Portraits — 100 Photographers: Selections from the FlakPhoto.com Archive

“For the past four years I’ve been publishing FlakPhoto.com, a website that features contemporary photography from an international community of artists. This fall, I teamed up with curator and Indie Photobook Library creator Larissa Leclair to produce a photo projection for FotoWeek DC, which is showing at the Corcoran Gallery of Art, November 6-13, 2010.”

Photo Center NW – 15th Annual Photographic Competition Exhibition

Juror: Denise Wolff, Aperture, Editor / Book Program

August 13th – September 17th

“The exhibition title, Present Tense, refers to the state of the medium today. In recent times, we have heard intense debate about the direction of photography: questions about the future of the medium, fears surrounding the decrease in magazine production and funding for content, the threat of potential extinction of the physical book, cynical commentaries that originality is a thing of the past. Ms. Wolff will be selecting projects that counter these concerns, highlighting the validity of contemporary photography today.”

Photo Booth: Postcard from Jordan: Carl Wooley : The New Yorker

On the first day of Center’s portfolio reviews in Santa Fe last month, Carl Wooley sat down across the table from me. I was familiar with a recent commission he’d completed for FOAM, of Amsterdam through the eyes of New York photographers, and many of the images from his new series “In the Rose Garden” had the same lonesome quality.

Wooley’s Night keenly captures the sense of movement in the city, without really giving away where the photos have been taken. The images were shot at night while he rode around on his bicycle. It’s the details that he preys on—through the use of zigzagging lines to draw attention to details—that give away the city’s identity.
